Why don′t I receive e-mails sent by the SCIS?
When being immatriculated to the TUD, every student receives his/her own student e-mail account. These addresses are used by most parties of the university. Please check these accounts regularly or install a forward to an e-mail address used by you.
Do I always need to present my matriculation certificate and were to get it?
From summer semester 2011 on students are requested to show their matriculation certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) to get any services of the SCIS. The new student card does not contain all information needed anymore.
Since winter semester 2015/16 there is one matriculation certificate included with the document providing the student card. Furthermore, it can be downloaded from the TUD web pages. If you can present a soft version of your matriculation certificate only, it will be accepted along with your student card only.
How and when can I cancel my registration for an examination?
Cancellation of your registration to the exam is possible
- 3 days (for written examinations)
- 14 days (for oral examinations)
BEFORE the examination date at the very latest. Therefore, contact the SCIS giving your matriculation number and the title of the examination. (An e-mail containing this information to be sent to the SCIS and the examiner in time, this will be sufficient as well.)
How many times may I take an examination and what are the deadlines for that?
You are supposed to pass an examination by your second try (first reexamination). This first reexamination is to be taken within one year.
In exceptional cases a second reexamination may be granted, which is to be taken by the next possible date.
May I retake a failed examination to improve my module grade?
If the module consists of several course examinations and the module grade is to be calculated, a failed course examination may be retaken, if the calculated module grade is failed as well. In case the calculated module grade passed anyway, you are not allowed to retake any of the course examinations, even if it was failed.
What happens, if I miss an examination without cancelation or doctor′s certificate after I registered for it?
In such case the examination will be considered as failed. Even when missing the deadline for reexamination, this will be considered as failed again. After failing the second reexamination, the examination will be considered as ultimately failed.
I registered for a written examination. May I take it orally as well?
You need to contact the examiner in charge. If you and the examiner agree on this, it is possible to take an oral examination instead of a written one.
Do I need to do anything to complete my modules?
For most modules the registration for the examination includes the application for the completed module. With these modules there is nothing to be done in addition.
Only modules consisting of several parts to be examined, they need to be applied in addition. If you are not sure, if such additional application is necessary, please ask in the SCIS.
May I take an Internship in a company?
You always need to have a professor of the TUD supervising your internship(s). If this professor gives allowance to complete the internship in a company, this is possible as long as this professor issues a respective examination certification for you.
What shall I do, if my supervisor for the master′s thesis is not available for writing the review or for making appointment for the defense?
You need to wait until the supervisor is able to do that. In case this takes too long, so that you cannot meet the deadline to defend your thesis within six weeks, this will not be a problem.
Anyway, please consider that you might need to register an additional semester, if all this exceeds the current semester. Please inform your supervisor on this fact, so that s/he may react in time to avoid such case.
May I start writing my master′s thesis, even if I didn′t complete all modules yet?
We advise to have acquired at least 75 credits in total, when starting to write your master′s thesis.
What are the periods and deadlines for the master′s thesis?
You have 23 weeks of preparation of your master′s thesis. This period can be extended by at most 13 weeks. The defense of your master′s thesis can take place 14 days after submission at the earliest, but no later than 6 weeks after submission.
What happens, if I am ill during the period of preparation of my master′s thesis?
You need to present the certification of your doctor. Then the period will be extended by the time you are ill accordingly.
My supervisor asked for an electronic copy of my master′s thesis. Where shall I submit that?
There is no official request for an electronic copy. If your supervisor requests this, please submit it to him/her directly. You may ask e. g., if submission via e-mail is sufficient.
May I have another person pick up my documents for me?
If you wish another person to pick up any documents on your behalf, you need to give this person an allowance letter written and signed by you. This allowance should clearly identify you and the person authorized by you (full names, dates of birth etc.).
